Business Applications Solution Architect

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Solution Architect in business applications to join our team of senior solution architects who lead and drive ICT service strategy and solution design for a diverse customer portfolio in a high-pressured and challenging environment.

You will be able to effectively understand and translate business requirements into technical solutions. You will provide functional and technical application management expertise across small to large-scale / enterprise class COTS solutions. You will be able to guide and mentor solution designers across a number of delivery teams ensuring solutions delivered are fit for purpose and deliver desired outcomes and value for money for the customer. Promoting best practice ensuring compliance and governance is adhered to throughout the solution life cycle will be second nature to you as will a clear focus on continuous improvement driving out efficiencies and cost savings through people, process and technology.

The role

  • Define and deliver against strategic initiatives of both BTLS and LCC

  •  Oversight of architectural direction on behalf of customer

  • Shaping solution architectures and/or designs using recognised methodologies and best practice architecture frameworks, for example TOGAF

  • Oversee and steer the implementation of the design in collaboration with other team members such as technical, security and data architects, solution designers/engineers

  • Input and development of solution design documents

  • Ensuring the design meets key functional and non-functional requirements

  • Working with test, transition and assurance functions to ensure that the approaches and test strategies followed are appropriate for the solution

  • Leading cost estimation efforts to inform the overall cost of the solution for quotation

  • Face off to senior stakeholders and vendors

  • Becoming the relevant stakeholders trusted advisors and seen as the thought tank for your specialist area

  • Lead on a sub-set of the application portfolio, ensuring those applications deliver best value for our customers and are effectively managed throughout their life cycle

  • Work closely with the Solution Delivery Manager and the project management community to ensure delivery of agreed solutions and upgrades of existing applications

  • Liaising and acting as primary point of contact and escalation point for the relevant counterpart within the customer organisation

  • Represent BTLS at all levels and attend customer and supplier meetings

About You

  • Able to set direction and technical scope and to lead / guide teams of technical individuals on their technical deliverables

  • Demonstrates subject matter expertise in own area and can apply it effectively and is able to apply logic across the board

  • Have significant design experience with various business applications (both enterprise class and COTS based)

  • Have an appreciation of various integration / middleware technologies and approaches

  • Have a good level of commercial awareness and be able to assess suitability of COTS or cloud SAAS solutions against requirements, security standards and technical specifications

  • Have experience of completing options and market appraisals and present recommendations based on value for money to the customer

  • Proven track-record in end-to-end designing and implementation of small to large-scale / enterprise class solutions

  • Ability to understand and translate business requirements and deliver value-for-money solutions

  • Experience with engaging with customers at all levels and external party organisations

  • Ideally you will have knowledge of best practise frameworks such as ITIL, TOGAF and/or ISO27001

  • Experience of working with other technical and non-technical teams to support project delivery

  • Strong leadership skills, experience of leading, managing, mentoring and motivating

  • Excellent communication, influencing and facilitation skills

  • Proficient problem solver / trouble shooter

  • Strong stakeholder relationship skills, confident in dealing with people at all levels within and outside of the organisation, including partner and client organisations

  • Adds personal value: drives the business to deliver results / looks to exceed customer expectations

  • Great team player – able to work closely with interdependent projects

  • Ability to deliver under pressure and demonstrate adaptability, flexibility and resilience

  • Proactive and positive 'can do' attitude, self-motivated and determined to succeed

  • Clear thinking and creative flair

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and self-development

  • Experience in a public sector organisation and a good understanding of the political context and business complexities within such a diverse organisation would be a distinct advantage.
