Senior Structural Engineer, Building Structures Team, County Hall, Preston.

About the Role

The Building Structures Team is part of the Design & Construction Service at Lancashire County Council and is responsible for the design and delivery of a large and varied portfolio of exciting building related projects across the county.

Lancashire is a vibrant and striking place to live and work. As the fourth largest local authority in the country and the largest in the North, we serve over 1.2 million residents.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, skilled individual to join our team of Structural Engineers; delivering a wide variety of schemes, working closely with our in house multi-disciplinary teams of Architects, Building Surveyors, Mechanical & Electrical Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, and Project Managers.

The county's property portfolio is diverse including schools, libraries, care centres and other buildings.  There are several listed structures within our portfolio.  We also provide a full design service to other public building owners.  The work is interesting and challenging, comprising a mix of new construction, refurbishment and maintenance of buildings.  Structural engineers could also be called upon to assess building defects and make recommendations.

The team also manages the Sports Ground Safety function ensuring that stadia are safe and compliant to host sporting events.

You will manage projects from concept/feasibility to detailed design, tender, and construction, through to successful completion on site.

You will take the lead on developing the structural design concept and details within a truly multi-disciplinary team to ambitious and challenging targets.

You will represent the Building Structures Team at meetings either with internal stakeholders or with contractors and clients.

You may also manage and mentor, less experienced staff including providing technical direction on aspects of structural design and checking of designs produced by others.

You will assist with managing the county's role with respect to the safety of sports grounds.  This role will take up to 10% of your workload and you will receive the appropriate training in this interesting role.

You will have a comprehensive working knowledge of the principles and practice of building structural design and stability, building construction, current design standards, and health & safety and CDM legislation.

You will have extensive experience of designing buildings constructed with concrete, steel, masonry, and timber, including "new-build" and "refurbishment" projects.

You will have extensive experience of using AutoCAD.

Although not essential, experience of using Revit and MasterSeries would be an advantage.

You will be expected to be decisive, and proactive, in providing rapid, practical, solutions to critical defects found in structures, and "during construction" problems raised by Contractors.

You will possess excellent communications skills and a customer focused approach to service delivery to agreed goals and targets.

If you have the drive and determination to take on this challenge, and wish to contribute to the local community making a difference to the people of Lancashire, we would like to hear from you.

You will be required to provide a car for use in connection with the duties of this post and must be insured for business use. However, we may consider you if you cannot drive because of a disability.

We do not hold a sponsorship licence and can only consider applications from candidates who are legally entitled to work in the UK. If you do not have the right to work in the UK, your application will not progress.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Team Manager Stephen Williams on 01772 533289.

We reserve the right to close down a vacancy early, before the closing date, if we receive sufficient applications.
